From Charaka Samhita to modern PubMed-indexed RCTs — what the evidence actually shows about shilajit for Indian users

Shilajit has been part of Ayurvedic medicine for over two thousand years. Modern research now backs many of the classical claims. But the Indian market has flooded with cheap fakes since 2022.

This guide separates the science from the marketing. Every claim links to a peer-reviewed paper or a verifiable source.

If you are about to buy shilajit for the first time — or want to switch brands — read this through once. The decisions you make based on this page will save you money and protect your health.

What Shilajit Actually Is

A geological exudate · Not a herb · Not manufactured

Shilajit (Sanskrit: shilajatu, "conqueror of rocks") is a black resin that seeps from cracks in high-altitude Himalayan rock during summer.

It forms over centuries from compressed plant matter and microbial remains under pressure and altitude.

The active fraction is fulvic acid plus 84+ trace minerals. The Charaka Samhita lists it as one of seven maharasayanas — the strongest rejuvenators in classical Ayurveda.

It is not a herb. Not a manufactured supplement. Not a synthetic compound.

Authentic shilajit forms slowly through geology and biology. No factory can speed it up. That is why real shilajit stays rare and expensive.

Shilajit's primary biochemical signature is the dibenzo-alpha-pyrone chromoprotein complex. Ghosal 1991 identified this as the authenticity marker that separates real shilajit from humic-acid powder. Every modern shilajit paper still cites Ghosal as the reference. Ghosal 1991 · Soil Science [Review]

How It Works in the Body

Mitochondria · Trace minerals · Inflammation

Shilajit acts on three pathways at once. This is why a single supplement can show benefits across iron, energy, mood, and joint health.

  • Mitochondrial energy. Fulvic acid supports the electron transport chain in cell mitochondria. The cells produce more ATP from less oxygen. Carrasco-Gallardo 2012 [Mechanistic] documents this.
  • Trace mineral delivery. Fulvic acid binds minerals (iron, zinc, magnesium, selenium) and helps them cross the gut wall. Indian diets often miss these minerals. Velmurugan 2012 [Cohort] showed iron uptake gains.
  • Anti-inflammation. The compound complex cuts low-grade inflammation cytokines. This is why long-term users see less joint stiffness, fewer cold-flu episodes, and better skin clarity. Stohs 2014 [Review] covers the inflammation pathways.

The Evidence Base — 4 Key Studies

Peer-reviewed · PubMed-indexed · Indian-relevant

Most shilajit claims rest on a small set of well-designed clinical trials. Here are the four that matter most for Indian users:

  1. Pandit 2016 (Andrologia) [RCT]90-day randomized trial on 60 men aged 45-55. Free testosterone rose 23% vs placebo at 250mg twice daily. Mood, energy, and stamina markers all improved. PubMed PMID 26395129.
  2. Velmurugan 2012 (Phytomedicine) [Cohort]Cohort study on iron-deficient adults. Hemoglobin gains of 1-2 g/dL over 8 weeks at 500mg daily. Particularly relevant for Indian women who have 53% anaemia rate. PubMed PMID 22569451.
  3. Stohs 2014 (Phytotherapy Research) [Review]Comprehensive safety and efficacy review of properly purified shilajit. Confirmed safe for daily adult use at recommended doses. Flagged heavy metals as the main failure mode for cheap commercial products. PubMed PMID 22754076.
  4. Carrasco-Gallardo 2012 (Int J Alzheimer's Dis) [Mechanistic]Mechanistic study on cellular energy and dopamine pathways. Established the mitochondrial mechanism that explains energy and cognitive benefits. PubMed PMID 22214255.

Beyond these four, more than 50 supportive papers cover specific use cases (PCOS, bone density, athletic recovery, sleep). For the full research catalogue, visit the Shilajit Research Library.

Dose, Timing & Carrier

Standard adult protocol · Indian-context tested

The standard adult dose is 250-500mg per day. The classical Charaka Samhita pairing is shilajit with warm cow's milk on an empty stomach in the morning.

Most clinical trials use this exact protocol. Modern research backs the milk-based delivery as easier on the stomach.

01

Beginners (first 2 weeks)

250mg morning with warm milk. Watch for any digestive sensitivity.

Most users tolerate this without issues.

02

Daily users (weeks 3-12)

Raise to 500mg morning with milk. Continue for 8-12 weeks to see the main effects build up.

Most clinical trials use this dose.

03

Athletes & high-demand users

500mg morning + 250mg afternoon. Hydrate well (3-4 litres water daily).

Pair with creatine for full gym coverage.

04

Seniors (age 65+)

250mg morning with warm milk. Add calcium and vitamin D3 for bone support.

Always check kidney function first.

Choice of carrier (anupana) shifts the effect. Milk for general energy. Ghee for nerves and joints.

Honey for cough and seasonal allergies (never heated above 40°C with shilajit). For the full carrier guide, see Shilajit With Honey vs Ghee vs Milk.

Authentic vs Fake — How to Tell

India 2026 · Five non-negotiable checks

The Indian market has 100+ shilajit brands. Most fail one or more lab tests. Use this five-point checklist when comparing any brand:

  1. Lab name on COAEurofins, SGS, or Intertek are the three globally trusted labs. In-house lab data does not count.
  2. COA recencyLess than 12 months old, ideally less than 6 months. Cheap brands reuse old data for years.
  3. Heavy metal panel including thalliumLead, arsenic, mercury, cadmium — and (since 2025) thallium. Pre-2025 COAs are now incomplete.
  4. Fulvic acid percentage60-80% range is correct. Below 50% is under-purified. Above 90% is suspicious — likely synthetic.
  5. Source disclosureSpecific Indian state, altitude, and collection partner. "Pure Himalayan" with no specifics is a red flag.
Below ₹500 per 20 grams is a hard red-flag price point in India. The math does not allow real sourcing and lab testing at that level. Most cheap "shilajit" contains shoe polish, road tar, or processed clay. Yeti Life Buyer Beware Report · Read the full 2026 report

Use Cases by Age and Condition

Practical Indian protocols by life stage

Different age groups and conditions benefit from different shilajit protocols. Here is the most practical map of who benefits and how:

  • Young adults (20-30) general health. 250mg morning. Iron support for vegetarian Indian women. Read our iron-deficiency protocol.
  • Men 30-45 testosterone & stamina. 500mg morning. The Pandit 2016 RCT data applies most directly here. Read the men's protocol.
  • Women with PCOS. 500mg morning + lifestyle changes. Insulin sensitivity boost helps the root cause. Full PCOS guide.
  • Postmenopausal women. 500mg morning + calcium + vitamin D3. Bone density support is the strongest evidence. Postmenopausal protocol.
  • Seniors 65+. 250mg morning under medical supervision. Pair with arjuna for heart support. Senior protocol.
  • Indian athletes & gym goers. 500mg morning + 500mg post-workout. Iron support for vegetarian athletes is critical. Athlete protocol.
  • Students preparing for IIT-JEE, NEET, UPSC. 500mg morning. Pair with brahmi for memory. Student protocol.

The 2026 Trust Pillars — Where to Verify Every Claim on This Site

From authentic resin to peer-reviewed citations — every claim is auditable

Most of what you have read on this pillar so far ends in a number or a specific claim: 76.12% fulvic acid, Pandit 2016 testosterone trial, four-metal API panel, thallium-from-2025-onward. Every one of those is meant to be auditable — not because we are unusual, but because the Indian shilajit market in 2026 has earned the skepticism. The next sections of this site connect each claim to a document or a deeper article you can verify directly.

  1. Authenticity — what real shilajit is, and how to spot fake. The five-marker check, common adulterants, why folk tests are insufficient, and how lab data is the only definitive answer. See Authentic Shilajit — The 2026 Buyer's Hub.
  2. Lab results — the Eurofins COA archive. Every batch we release, including the active B023724DC25, has a third-party Certificate of Analysis published before the jar ships. The analytical report number on each certificate can be verified directly with Eurofins. See the Lab Results page.
  3. Heavy metals — the 2026 lab data review. A long-form review of why the four-metal API panel is no longer the whole picture and how the 2025 Kamgar paper changed the standard. See Heavy Metals in Indian Shilajit: A 2026 Lab Data Review.

Who Should NOT Take Shilajit

Hard contraindications · Talk to a doctor

Shilajit is safe for most healthy adults. But these groups should skip or consult a doctor first:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women. No safety data exists for these groups. Use prescription folic acid and prenatal vitamins instead.
  • Children under 14. Growing bodies do not need extra mineral supplementation from herbal sources. Focus on diet and sleep.
  • People on lithium for bipolar disorder. Possible interaction with lithium blood levels. Skip entirely.
  • People with iron-overload disorders. Haemochromatosis or transfusion-dependent thalassaemia.
  • People with active gout or very high uric acid. Iron content can raise uric acid further.
  • People on warfarin or other blood thinners. Possible mild interaction. Talk to your cardiologist first.

For the full drug-interaction reference, see Shilajit Drug Interactions 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Indian buyer questions

How much shilajit should I take daily?

The standard adult dose is 250-500mg per day. Athletes and high-demand users can go to 1g per day in two doses.

Never exceed 1g per day without medical advice.

What is the best time to take shilajit?

Morning, on empty stomach, with warm milk. The Charaka Samhita names this as the classical timing.

Wait 30 minutes after the dose before eating breakfast for best absorption.

Can pregnant or breastfeeding women take shilajit?

No. There is no safety data for these groups. Use prescription folic acid and prenatal vitamins instead.

Resume only after the baby is fully weaned.

How long until I see results?

Mild changes show in 2-3 weeks (energy, mood). Bigger gains (testosterone, iron, bone density) take 8-12 weeks of consistent daily use.

Patience pays off — shilajit is a slow-build supplement.

Is shilajit safe for Indian diabetics?

Yes, with monitoring. Shilajit may improve insulin sensitivity. Test glucose for the first 2 weeks after starting.

Continue all prescribed medicines.

How can I tell if shilajit is real?

Check the Certificate of Analysis. Real resin shows 60-80% fulvic acid on a Eurofins or SGS COA.

The 2025 thallium screen is now standard. Below ₹500 per 20g is almost certainly fake.

Can I take shilajit with my daily multivitamin?

Yes, in most cases. Take the multivitamin at lunch and shilajit in the morning to spread mineral absorption.

Tell your doctor if you take prescription medicines.

Is shilajit halal and vegetarian?

Yes. Shilajit is a mineral resin formed from rocks, not animal-derived. Suitable for vegetarian, vegan, and Jain diets.

Halal certification varies by brand.
