How to Verify Shilajit Is Genuine: Testing Evidence Report
How to Verify Shilajit Is Genuine: Testing Evidence Report
This report from The Yeti Life sets out which checks can show what is actually in a shilajit product. The sources agree on one point: without laboratory testing there is no way to know a product's contents or whether it is free of heavy metals. None of the sources found for this report validates home tests such as burning, dissolving or stretching resin.
What regulators and testers say
- Operation Supplement Safety says that without laboratory testing there is no way to know a shilajit product's ingredients, their amounts, or whether it is free of heavy metals. It suggests checking labels for a third-party certification seal from NSF Certified Sport, Informed Sport, BSCG Certified Drug Free or USP.
- Cleveland Clinic advises choosing products tested by an independent laboratory, and notes that batches differ in composition.
- The US FDA does not approve supplements before sale; the company is responsible for making sure a product is not adulterated or misbranded. FDA testing has found heavy metals in some ayurvedic products that were not labelled as containing them.
- ConsumerLab.com, in its published shilajit review criteria, requires a product sold as “purified” shilajit to contain at least 5% fulvic acid, and an “extract” at least 10%.
Checks compared
| Check | What it can show | What it cannot show |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate of analysis for your batch | Measured results for that batch, if it names the batch, the laboratory and a report number | Anything about a different batch; values the certificate does not report |
| Third-party certification seal (NSF, Informed Sport, BSCG, USP) | That an outside body has evaluated the product under its programme | A seal only covers what that programme tests |
| Fulvic acid percentage on the label | A stated minimum, for comparison against ConsumerLab's 5% and 10% thresholds | Whether the figure was measured, and by which method |
| Home tests: burning, dissolving, stretching | Nothing validated by the sources in this report | Heavy metals, microbes or fulvic acid content |
Reading a certificate: a worked example
Using our own published certificate, check that each of these is present before trusting a document:
- Batch number matches the jar. Example: B023724DC25.
- A laboratory report you can trace. Example: Eurofins report AR-258-2025-20112882-01, sample code 258-2025-20112882.
- Analysis dated before release. Example: analysed 18–23 Dec 2025, released 24 Dec 2025.
- Fulvic acid as a number. Example: 76.12%, against a specification above 75%.
- A result for each heavy metal. Example: lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium each reported as Pass against the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India specification. A certificate that gives measured concentrations tells you more than a pass result.
