Shilajit Daily Use: Safety Evidence Report
This report from The Yeti Life sets out what human trials and public-health bodies say about taking shilajit every day. Five daily-dosing trials were found, lasting from 28 days to 48 weeks. The longest used a standardised extract; traditional resin has been studied daily for 28 days. None of these sources shows what happens beyond the periods studied.

Most abstracts describe benefits in detail and safety briefly or not at all. “Not described” means the abstract is silent, not that no problems occurred.
What public-health bodies say
- Operation Supplement Safety (US Department of Defense, September 2024) says studies of up to 500 mg of shilajit extract suggest it may be safe for short-term use, and that possible heavy-metal exposure remains a concern.
- Cleveland Clinic (March 2025) reports that the few trials done suggest shilajit is relatively safe when taken as directed, but notes that supplements are rarely monitored for side effects after sale, so little is known outside trials.
- A 2014 review in Phytotherapy Research describes shilajit safety as well documented in animal and human studies, while noting that relatively few well-controlled human studies exist.
- The US FDA does not have authority to approve dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold.
The risk that daily use adds up
- The US FDA has warned that certain unapproved ayurvedic products contain harmful levels of heavy metals that are typically not on the label.
- NCCIH reports a 2015 survey in which 40 percent of people using Ayurvedic preparations had elevated blood lead levels.
- A 2025 study in BMC Chemistry measured thallium at up to 0.226 µg/g in natural shilajit and up to 0.5 µg/g in some supplements.
Daily use means any contaminant in a batch is taken daily too, which is why a certificate for the batch you buy matters.
What is not known
- Safety of daily use beyond 48 weeks for extract, or beyond 28 days for resin.
- Safety in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or in children. NCCIH notes that many supplements have not been tested in these groups.
- How often side effects occur in everyday use outside trials.
